9. Lee Westwood, professional golfer, founder of the Lee Westwood Academy and two golf schools, and Golf Roots ambassador

Former world number one Lee has been probably the most consistent top golfer in the world since 1996, when he won his first of 22 European Tour events. It’s incredible to think that 14 years after being named the tour’s player of the year, he’s still in the top three in the world.

But he is much more than just a successful professional golfer. He was taught by coaches funded by the junior golf charity, the Golf Foundation, in the 1980s, and throughout his career he has worked hard to encourage juniors to improve their golf skills in order to give something back to the game that has given him so much.

In recent years he launched the Lee Westwood Golf Academy for seven to 16 year olds, in which many juniors have been taught by some of the best golfers in the world – often Lee himself. He then set up two Lee Westwood Golf Schools where 16 year olds and upwards receive expert golf tuition whilst working towards a BTEC national diploma in sport.

In 2009, while being the number one player in the world, he agreed to become the Golf Foundation’s Golf Roots ambassador, which is partly why the charity recognised him with its ‘Spirit of Golf’ award for his ongoing services to junior golf.
