6. Hugh Robertson MP, minister for sport

Because he is also the Olympics minister, in the two years he has been in post, Hugh has devoted very little attention to golf.

However, that should not detract from the enormous power he has over the game in this country.

Sport England, which funds the England Golf Partnership (EGP), which in turn funds the English county golf partnerships that have done so much to grow the game of golf in England in the last few years, is accountable to Hugh, ensuring his role in the continued working success of the likes of Jennie Price, chief executive of Sport England, and Roger Moreland, the EGP’s chief operating officer.

Sport England also invests lottery or taxation money into golf, with the final decision normally being made by Hugh.

He has also ensured some money has been spent on protecting sports’ fields in the last two years.
