4. John Petrie, chief executive of England Golf

England Golf, the governing body for amateur golf in England, is not just the biggest golf union in Europe, with nearly 2,000 golf clubs and over 750,000 golf club members on its books, it is arguably bigger than every other golf union in Europe combined.

Created this year as a result of a merger between the men’s English Golf Union and the English Women’s Golf Association, its first chief executive is John, the man who led the English Golf Union from 2008 to 2011, and prior to that was both general secretary of British Greyhound Racing and a lieutenant colonel in the army.

Almost every club golfer in England funds England Golf via a small levy in their subscription, and the body has contributed towards the introduction of the game to thousands of people – in particular recently through the England Golf Partnership’s ‘Get into golf’ campaign, secured state funding for numerous initiatives and even helped some clubs stay afloat in recent years.

John Petrie is also the boss of James Crampton, England Golf’s handicap manager, ensuring that he is the ultimate handicapping authority for all clubs and members under the organisation’s jurisdiction, meaning he also has a role in hundreds of thousands of conversations about bragging rights, going on in every clubhouse, every day.
