10. Golfweek, 2008. ‘Caught in a noose’

When US golf presenter Kelly Tilghman was suspended for saying to Nick Faldo on air that players should ‘lynch [Tiger Woods] in a back alley’, Golfweek Magazine decided to put the story on its front cover.

Unfortunately, the furore over its own coverage soon eclipsed that surrounding Tilghman, as it used a noose as its cover image, beside the headline ‘caught in a noose’.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem called the cover ‘outrageous and irresponsible’, and Dave Seanor, editor of the magazine, was sacked.
