Industry celebrates Justin Rose

justin roseThe British golf industry has been celebrating the success of Justin Rose at the US Open after the world number three golfer became the first Englishman to win the major in 43 years.

Rose has promoted junior golf and greenkeeping sustainability throughout his career – he developed under the Golf Foundation and is an ambassador for the STRI Golf Environment Awards.

The Golf Foundation, the charity that works to make golf more accessible for youngsters, has released a picture of Justin Rose winning its ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ in 1996, and said it was ‘delighted’ about Rose’s success.

“Our whole team is delighted for Justin this week. I think all British golf fans realise what a great player he is and how deserving this US Open victory is for him,” said a spokesman.

“Justin has already repaid our early support by appearing at Golf Foundation events during professional tournaments to promote both our golf formats for youngsters and our initiatives in schools and clubs. He will now perform a fantastic service as I am sure he will inspire a whole new generation of young golfers who dream of emulating his achievements.

“A young Hampshire boy called Justin Rose, aged 11, came fifth in the final of the Golf Foundation Under 13s Championship in 1991 and two years later won the Under 14s Championship outright, at Patshull Park in Shropshire.

“The Golf Foundation funded club coaching which included Justin, and his reward for winning the Under 14s in 1993 was to be invited to a coaching week at Wentworth in the spring of 1994, led by then Ryder Cup European captain Bernard Gallacher.”

Justin Rose has also been an official ambassador for the STRI’s Golf Environment Awards, which rewards golf clubs and greenkeepers for outstanding environmental work, for the past four years, and has hosted receptions for winners.

A spokesman for the STRI said: “STRI and partners of the Golf Environment Awards are thrilled to offer our congratulations to Justin Rose.”

Several golf clubs have also expressed their support for Rose on social media. For instance, HedgeEnd Golf Centre tweeted: ‘A fantastic win. Hats off to you sir!’ Crown Golf wrote on Facebook: ‘Congratulations to Justin. Now that is how you play the last hole when you are leading the tourney!’ And Hampton Court Golf Club wrote: ‘Congratulations to Justin Rose – if he thought the rough was tough in Merion, let’s see him try ours!’
