The Golf Club Managers’ Association’s 2013/4 ‘Manager of the Year’ competition has started.

Managers of golf clubs can be nominated either via an online form on HowDidiDo or by sending in a postal application through Golf Club Management’s print magazine.

The competition, now in its 10th year, rewards one outstanding golf club manager with a holiday to Spain and recognises several others for the good work they have done. Only members of the Golf Club Managers’ Association (GCMA) can be considered for the prize.

Nominees must have made some form of special contribution to their club; in recent years this has particularly been increasing revenue or members during the economic downturn. Shortlisted finalists will be treated to a day out at one of Britain’s premier golf clubs, while the winner will receive a holiday to Rioja in Spain, including a tour of vineyards and a round of golf.

Debbie Pern, manager of Deeside Golf Club in Aberdeenshire, is the current holder of the award. She, for example, led the major renovation of her clubhouse, dramatically improved the club’s catering facility and converted an unused flat at the venue into a thriving conference centre.

The competition is sponsored by HowDidiDo, the largest online golf network in Europe, which manages over a million golfers’ handicaps, and Tonic Golf, which provides top of the range insurance solutions to golfers and golf clubs.

Barry Dyett, managing director of HowDidiDo, said: “There are some fantastic golf club managers in this country who are securing the futures of their golf clubs by showing incredible business acumen. It’s essential that they are recognised so that the whole industry knows what good managers can achieve.”

Alex Rae, managing director of Tonic Golf, added: “Running a golf club brings with it almost unique demands that only the most skilled leaders can deal with. It’s quite right that they should then be rewarded. I would urge every member of a golf club – if you think your manager is doing a good job, then let us know why. It could lead to a something special for you, your manager and your golf club.”
