£250K simulators delayed by bats

A golf club in Leicestershire could be waiting for months until customers can use two £250,000 simulators it has bought – because bats were found in the building housing them.

The mammals were found in a wooden building next to the clubhouse at Stapleford Park, which was being converted to accommodate the two high-tech Full Swing simulators, early in the summer, and work was immediately halted.

The simulators, which allow golfers to virtually play some of the best courses in the world, were bought to capitalise on non-golf season spending, and it was originally thought that they would be up and running with only a few weeks’ delay.

However, although the club says all the bats subsequently safely left the building following a plan Stapleford Park devised, it now has to carry out a full survey of the site to prove the animals have gone, and then wait for the all-clear from its local council to continue with the work.

A spokesman for the club said he was concerned that this process would take months – ensuring that the simulators wouldn’t be used until even after Christmas.

However, despite the loss in income, Stapleford Park’s PGA professional added that the club was happy to help a protected species.

“Bats have become vulnerable due to diminishing habitat and are a protected species,” said Richard Alderson. “Stapleford Park is very keen to play a part in helping to preserve this endangered species.”
