Golf coach pleads guilty to Formby theft

An old age pensioner and golf coach has pled guilty to stealing money from golfers in Formby Golf Club in Liverpool’s changing room.

Formby GC, where a golf coach stole from three golfers

Peter Flowers, 69, said he had difficulty accepting that he could “stoop so low” after he was caught on CCTV following three men into the changing room and leaving shortly after.

The three men revealed that their wallets, collectively containing £295, had been stolen while they were having a shower. Nobody other than Flowers entered or left the changing room during this time, CCTV confirmed.

Sefton Magistrates Court heard that Flowers, a golf coach who was visiting Formby Golf Club, had been struggling financially and had not received money for some coaching he had done. He also has a conviction for theft and burglary dating back to 2005.

Flowers had originally denied the charge and had accepted that the person caught on camera looked like him, but that it wasn’t him.

However, CCTV also caught his car at the time of the incident and police traced him via his registration number.

Melanie Tomlinson, representing Flowers, said: “As he was about to leave the club he went to the toilet and, as he entered the changing rooms, he saw the wallets and made the theft.

“He has had difficulty to accept that he could stoop so low.

“He did not think he could commit an offence like this again.”

The magistrates imposed a four month 7pm-7am curfew on him, to be served at either his mother’s address in East Sussex or at his ex-wife’s home in Merseyside.

He was also ordered to pay the £295 back to the golf club members, but was exempted of the £250 prosecution costs because of his ‘limited means’.
