Golf club owner De Vere has introduced a reciprocal scheme in which golfers can join six leading golf clubs for the price of one membership.

The company, which owns 15 golf clubs in the UK, including The Belfry, brought in the De Vere Club, a flexible and reciprocal membership scheme in which golfers could play several rounds at a range of venues for a few hundred pounds per year, in 2010. More than 13,000 people joined this club in less than three years, making it the most successful golf membership scheme in the country in the last five years.

Aimed more at the premium end of the market but keen to tap into the success of the De Vere Club, the company has now introduced ‘The County Club’, which golfers can be full members of for £1,250.

For that price members will receive unlimited golf at Mottram Hall, Slaley Hall, Oulton Hall, The Carrick on Loch Lomond, Belton Woods and Dunston Hall golf resorts, plus free access to all leisure classes at the six venues as well as discounts on food and beverage, spa treatments and accommodation.

“We have carefully pinpointed areas we felt pertinent in evolving the De Vere brand. The stage is now set for ‘The Country Club.’ This will deliver a premier lifestyle membership,” said Robert B. Cook, CEO of De Vere Hotels & Village Urban Resorts.

“The aim is to create a vibrant environment, rich with activities, where luxury and escapism remain easily accessible. Golf and leisure are key elements in ‘The Country Club’ strategy and are two areas that our selected resorts are leaders in.”

Cook added that The Country Club will be in addition to the De Vere Club rather than replacing it, but hinted that improvements in the economy will result in the De Vere Club being modified.

“The De Vere Club is unique in so much that it sought to balance flexible membership requirements against the obvious economic hardships,” he said. “Whilst there will be modifications to the membership, it will remain a core product for De Vere.”

He added that joint five-day memberships can also be bought for The Country Club, which cost less than £1,000 per person. Corporate memberships are also available at £3,999.

Sounds like a really good scheme. If you get unlimited golf at all six venues then I might just sign up myself – the industry needs more reciprocal deals like this.

If you are a golf club that doesnt offer reciprocal deals with other golf clubs AND you are losing money, maybe it’s time to do something about it!
