The six finalists for the Golf Club Managers’ Association’s ‘Manager of the Year’ competition have been announced.

The competition, sponsored by HowDidiDo and Tonic Golf, recognises and rewards UK golf club managers for outstanding professional achievements in recent years.

The six are Emma Clifford from West Essex Golf Club, Trevor Atkinson from Filton Golf Club, Michael Rutter from Ryton Golf Club, James Washington from Bradford Golf Club, Terry Crump from Harpenden Common Golf Club and Simon Smith from Aston Wood Golf Club.

West Essex Golf Club brought in 115 new members last year, has significantly reduced its costs and has become both a GolfMark and Get into Golf venue.

Filton Golf Club has brought in nearly 300 new members in the last three years, has been awarded GolfMark ‘High Achiever’ status, has converted unused land into a juniors’ practice facility and has reduced annual subscriptions by £155.

Ryton Golf Club has seen visitors’ income more than quadruple in the last three years, while membership numbers have risen significantly. Its marketing has also been transformed.

Bradford Golf Club has carried out a major refurbishment of its clubhouse, which was funded by member loan note subscriptions and has led to a sharp increase in revenue-generating functions, and has reduced costs by £24,000 per year.

Harpenden Common funded, partly through a six-figure cost-cutting exercise, the building of a new clubhouse on common land and has been praised for its environmental work.

And Aston Wood brought in a six figure sum thanks to a waste moving project, which has helped fund new developments at the club, which in turn have seen food and beverage turnover reach record levels.

Each finalist will be profiled on www.golfclubmanagement.net over the next few weeks.

In total, the competition received 111 nominations from members of the public for their Manager of the Year, the highest since it started in 2004.

The winner will be announced at the Golf Club Managers’ Association’s annual general meeting at Conwy Golf Club in Wales in April. The prize for the winner will include a holiday for two to Rioja in Spain.

HowDidiDo is Europe’s largest network of online golfers and Tonic Golf is the market leader in insurance provision for golfers. Representatives of at least one of the two companies will visit each of the finalists’ golf clubs, along with either Bob Williams, chief executive of the Golf Club Managers’ Association, or Debbie Pern, manager of Deeside Golf Club in Scotland, between now and April.

Debbie was named Manager of the Year in 2013.
