The Turnberry Performance Academy – a golfer’s technological dream?

Turnberry Resort is one of the most renowned golfing destinations in the world. Home to the iconic Ailsa course, host of four Open Championships, as well as the highly-rated Kintyre course and the nine-hole Arran, Turnberry has now given golfing enthusiasts another reason to visit.

Last spring, Turnberry launched the Turnberry Performance Academy (TPA) – a golfing academy with an entirely holistic approach to coaching the game of golf, offering a true centre of excellence for all golfing abilities to develop and learn how to improve their game.

Incorporating the principles of the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) – a world leader in studying the physical elements of golf coaching – the TPA aims to make tuition as informative as it is enjoyable. By assessing the player’s equipment, as well as the physical, technical and mental aspects of their game, the academy aims to help individuals develop and achieve personal goals in order to maximise their golfing potential.

The academy employs a number of skilled PGA golf professionals who have been specially trained to tutor players and give bespoke guidance through their personal development, aided by a number of pieces of state-of-the-art golf analysis software, which are a must for any golfing enthusiast to experience.

The Turnberry Performance Academy concept complements Turnberry’s long-standing partnership with TaylorMade Golf. Turnberry is the only location in Scotland to host TaylorMade’s ‘Performance Lab’, in which players can receive a fully-customised golf club fitting experience. By utilising state-of-the-art 3D motion capture technology, the Performance Lab is able to match a set of clubs to an individual’s swing characteristics.

For those looking to improve their short game, the TPA has a special ‘Putting Lab’ which allows the player to visually record and evaluate their technique frame by frame and from a variety of different positions. Featuring a Huxley all-weather putting surface, the Putting Lab has a number of HD slow-motion video cameras which capture the individual’s movement, as well as the roll of the golf ball. Using ultrasound technology, the Putting Lab provides players with scientifically precise feedback on all parameters of their putting stroke. Tutors can then outline areas for improvement and provide exercises for players to improve technique.

Michael Sweenie, academy manager and head teaching professional at the Turnberry Resort, commented: “It is a unique advantage and a privilege for Turnberry to be able to offer a fully holistic golf academy suitable for all ages and skill levels and it feels quite fitting that this should be located at the world’s first golf resort.”
