Two golf clubs have made history via a charitable donation that both made.

A Surrey venue has given what is thought to be the largest donation ever made in the UK by a golf club to a charity while a cancer trust has said a donation it has received from another club is the largest in its history.

St George’s Hill Golf Club in Surrey has donated just under £60,000 to Myeloma UK, a charity that funds research into myeloma, a cancer that arises from plasma cells. The money will be specifically used to support PhD students at the Myeloma UK Research Centre at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), London.

The money was raised via a golf day and online auction in aid of Peter ‘Norm’ Hunt, a board member of Myeloma UK who died of the disease in 2012. He was also a well-known figure at the golf club.

Club member Alistair Defriez said: “It was an extraordinarily successful day. Norm’s wife Claire was overwhelmed with joy at seeing so many of Norm’s old mates gathered together in his memory, and supporting a cause he did so much to promote and develop.”

Myeloma UK chief executive Eric Low OBE added: “During his 10 years as a board member, Peter played a pivotal role in the development and growth of Myeloma UK, and especially our research programme.

“The memorial fund in Peter’s name was established to ensure the significant contribution he made to myeloma research would continue after his death.

“We are delighted that the event was such a success and a big thank you to the hard working team behind the St George’s Hill golf day.”

Lindsay Perera, Myeloma UK’s head of major gifts, said, “We are delighted at the success of the St George’s Hill Golf Club event – it is a testament to what can be achieved when people get together to pay tribute to a friend. An individual can do a lot, but when communities like a golf, rugby or rotary club join forces to make a difference, the results can be truly remarkable. Huge thanks to the hard working team behind the golf day and to all who supported.”

Recently Golf Club Management revealed that the average golf club in the UK gave approximately £7,000 to charity in 2013.

Some clubs have given several times this amount.

Chislehurst Golf Club has given £30,000 to the Chartwell Cancer Trust, which provides financial support to the Chartwell cancer and leukaemia unit in the Princess Royal University Hospital.

The trust has said it was the highest single donation it has ever received.

The sum was the result of fundraising by the club and its members in 2013, including a charity golf day followed by dinner and an auction.

A spokesman said: “To date, this is the largest single donation the trust has ever received.

“We are all most grateful for the support from the captains and the efforts they have made throughout the year.”
