Two major golf clubs sold

Two of Britain’s most important golf clubs have been sold within a few days of each other. It is the latest sign that there is renewed confidence in the UK golf industry.

Turnberry Golf Resort – one of two major golf clubs to have been sold this week

The new buyers of Tewkesbury Park Hotel, Golf and Country Club in Gloucestershire, and Open venue Turnberry Resort, in Ayrshire, have both suggested they will invest in the facilities.

Tewkesbury Park employs more than 60 people and has been bought by Tewkesbury Park Limited from Washington Hotels for an undisclosed sum.

The company’s managing director, Chris McIntosh, said he and his sister, Claire White, will improve the venue.

“We are delighted to have been able to acquire Tewkesbury Park Hotel, Golf and Country Club and to have the opportunity to revive this important local institution.

“We are investing for the long term and, with the support of Focus Hotels Management, our aim is to re-establish the hotel as one that does justice to its location which has magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.”

The club has an 18-hole golf course, a six-hole academy course, driving range, putting green, pro shop and conference, banqueting and wedding facilities.

McIntosh added that a “significant amount” will be spent on improvements.

Meanwhile Open venue Turnberry has been sold to US property tycoon Donald Trump from Dubai-based group Leisurecorp, also for an undisclosed sum.

Mr Trump has issued a statement saying: “I intend to invest many millions of dollars in order to bring the hotel to the highest levels of luxury.

“When completed, I believe that the Turnberry Hotel will be the finest and most luxurious hotel in all of Europe.”

Like many UK venues & golf clubs Tewkesbury Park has been suffering from under investment for a long time. Delighted its been sold and look forward to seeing some much needed major improvements. As for Turnberry & Mr Trump I look forward to seeing marble basins and gold taps in the locker rooms!
