Almost 40 percent of golfers aged 15 to 25 want WiFi capabilities at the golf course

A poll of thousands of people has found that not having WiFi capabilities on the course is the fourth biggest reason why people aged 15 to 25 are not playing golf.

The findings are part of Syngenta’s research into the golfing habits and thoughts of 3,500 people, which is covered extensively in both the May and June issues of Golf Club Management magazine.

As part of the research, non-golfers and golfers in the 15 to 25-year-old age group were asked a series of questions.

Asked why they had never taken up golf, 42 percent of non-golfers said they did not know how to get started.

When asked what would encourage them to give golf a try, the top four responses were:

  1. More of my friends and family participate (57%)
  2. Easy access to affordable golf lessons (52%)
  3. Relaxed rules (42%)
  4. WiFi capabilities on the course (39%)

Among the young golfers questioned, 42 percent said their preferred time of day to play golf was mid afternoon– a good indicator for clubs and courses of when young golfers like to play.

Young players also expressed the sort of amenities they would like to see at their club or course, including a bar with a Sky Sports television (37%) and an indoor golf simulator (34%).

Eric Brown, Global Turf Business Manager of Syngenta, said: “While some of the findings may not come as a surprise to clubs and courses, one of the key themes customers talked about was their desire for relaxed, family-friendly facilities.

“The research underlined the huge opportunities around female and junior participation and the importance of access to affordable coaching for new players.”
