The chief executive of the golf group that owns South Essex Golf Centre has said the club is not going to close down – contrary to rumours that it would.

Essex Live has reported that ‘in recent months rumours have been circulating that the South Essex Golf Centre is due to close.’

In April we revealed that the former Hull City Football Club chairman, Russell Bartlett, was to close down the bowls club that sits next to South Essex Golf Centre, amid plans to replace it with a hotel, or possibly housing.

Stephen Towers, chief executive of Crown Golf, which owns and operates the golf centre, has clarified matters.

He said: “South Essex Golf Centre is a great attraction for golfers and following refurbishment work in 2016 we have seen good growth in the numbers of people using and enjoying its facilities.

“Contrary to some rumours which are flying about, South Essex is very much staying a golf centre, which is what we do best.

“Our members and other customers can be sure that South Essex Golf Centre plans to continue providing 27 fantastic holes of golf and the south east’s leading footgolf course for years to come, as well as our driving range, new-look clubhouse and all those things which make us popular for weddings and family celebrations too.

“We would welcome future development there [at the now empty bowls club], and indeed would warmly welcome even more customers to the home of friendly golf in Essex, if this happened.”

South Essex GC was designed by Reg Plumridge in 1994 and presents 27 holes of golf on three nine-hole loops – the Hawk, Heron and Vixen courses – with superb panoramic views over the Thames Valley and into Kent.

In 2011 The Golf Business looked at the exceptional environmental work South Essex does.
