A poll of 10,000 people on their holiday preferences could prove to be valuable to Scottish golf clubs.

The research shows that British golfers would rather play golf in Scotland than anywhere else in the world, including some of the most luxurious destinations on the planet, and that they would prefer to visit outside of the busy summer months.

Golf Travel Centre hosted a competition where over 10,000 entrants were polled to find out their favourite golfing destinations and the time of year they prefer to get away for a golf trip.

More than two in five people (41 per cent) asked chose Scotland as their preferred location for a golf and spa getaway over the more exotic locations of Mauritius, Mexico and the Seychelles, highlighting the attraction of a more traditional golfing holiday.

The questionnaire also highlighted May and September as the preferred months to get away for a holiday with golfers making the most of the ideal playing conditions at the beginning and end of the golf season.

“From the 10,000 entrants, more than one in every four golf fans chose Scotland as the next destination on their golf holiday bucket list,” said spokeswoman Harriet Goffman.

“Internationally renowned as the ‘Home of Golf’ and with a golfing history dating back to the 15th century, Scotland claims some of the finest courses in the world. From superb links courses such as Turnberry and Muirfield to the PGA Centenary Course, Scotland has seen some of the greatest golfing moments in history.”
