Educational podcasts for greenkeepers to listen to as they cut the grass has been launched by a fellow greenkeeper.

”The idea for producing an audio greenkeeping and sports’ turf industry podcast came to me a few years ago,” said Matthew McLean, the producer of Rootzone. “During one summertime I was spending a lot of time on a mower every day and would listen to my iPod or radio. I downloaded some audio language courses and found it to be a novelty that you could often work and learn at the same time.

“Many greenkeepers and turf professionals are interested in theory; they will attend seminars, debates, discussions and so on. With this in mind I thought it would be good to have an audio source that could record much of these contributions and make them available to greenkeepers to listen to at any time.

“Videos, books, websites and magazines can all be excellent sources of information, but they do of course have their limitations. You cannot access any of them whilst driving a car, operating machinery or even going out for a jog. The beauty of audio is its flexibility. It can have its limitations too of course, but compliments the other listed mediums very well.

“I began producing Rootzone – the independent sports’ turf industry podcast at the beginning of the year. After obtaining the necessary recording and editing equipment, as well as the training to operate it, I set up some interviews and got the ball rolling. I managed to secure the services of a professional radio news reader to present the podcast in between interviews, and set up an account on the audio hosting website Mixcloud, at www.mixcloud.com/rootzone.

“I have had a lot of very positive feedback for the podcasts so far, and I’m always looking for any constructive comments / criticism in order to help me produce the best possible resource of audio education for turf industry workers.

“I’m also always on the lookout for people from all types of roles, jobs and levels of experience to interview for the podcast. If you think this is something that might interest you please drop me an email at rootzone@live.co.uk.”

The podcasts can also be found here.
