The actor, author and television presenter, Stephen Fry, has been granted honorary life membership at Connemara Golf Club in Ireland.

The host of QI was filming the BBC programme, Fry’s Planet Word, in which he explored language, in December 2010, when he visited the club, because every member there speaks Gaelic. The County Galway club, which borders the Atlantic, responded by giving him the membership, as revealed when the programme was broadcast in October 2011.

Fry joked: “This is going to cost me a lot of balls because not many of them are going to hit land!”
