£50k landfill grant for golf club
One of the world’s oldest golf clubs has received £50,000 of government funding to update its course and clubhouse in an environmentally friendly way.
Marlborough Golf Club in Wiltshire, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, has been awarded the money because the government’s Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) has agreed to allow a private waste management firm, The Hills Group, to offset a portion of the landfill tax it would otherwise be paying while working at the club, to be offset.
The money has been given to the club to install a new ball distribution and retrieval system in its practice area, while the mens’ and ladies’ toilets are being refurbished and a new disabled toilet and stair lift are being built.
Les Trute, general manager of the club, said: ‘The grant is excellent news for members. This year sees the club celebrate its 125th anniversary. The new facilities will be in place by the time we run our full anniversary programme, which starts in May.”
A spokesman for the LCF said: “The principle of the LCF is that it offsets some of the negative impacts of living very close to a landfill site. This is done by allowing the landfill operators to pay a proportion of their landfill tax liability to not-for-profit organisations that deliver benefits to the general public, biodiversity or the environment.”
The club has also announced that it will be running a series of free golf lessons for beginners during the Easter holidays.
From April 2 to April 6 there will be several one-hour sessions taught by the club’s professional, Simon Amor.
Les Trute added: “This is a wonderful opportunity for people who have never tried golf before. The one-hour sessions are all free. Equipment will be provided. All you need to do is book your session and turn up.”
Great way to get people of all ages involved. If your club is doing something similar, let us know and we’ll support. http://t.co/vUVCB6r71j
