The 1995 Ryder Cup-winning captain, Bernard Gallacher, has regained consciousness after suffering a suspected heart attack last week.

The 64-year-old has also been taken off a ventilator and doctors have said his condition is now stable.

However, they have added that ‘there is a long way to go yet’.

Gallacher, who played in every Ryder Cup between 1969 and 1983, was in a critical condition at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary’s high dependency unit after he fell ill last week following a golf event where he had been the guest of honour. He collapsed during the gala dinner.

His nephew, Stephen, 38, said he is making “slow but positive progress”, although he remains in intensive care.

Bernard Gallacher is a regular golfer at Wentworth, the club he captained in 2000. Its chief executive, Julian Small, has said the club was distressed to hear the news last week.

“We were all shocked and distressed to hear about Bernard’s collapse but there has been a bit of good news,” he told GetSurrey.

“Bernard has been taken off the ventilator and has regained consciousness. The doctors are pleased with his progress but caution there is a long way to go yet.

“It was such a shock because Bernard is such a strong and fit man who has never smoked and who regularly works out in the Wentworth gym.

“Hopefully it is that fitness that will help him pull through. We are certainly hoping and praying for that outcome.

“He is a great ambassador for our club and the whole European Tour but at this time our thoughts are with his wife Lesley and the family.”
