The US-based company ClubCorp has become the world’s leading owner of golf clubs, following six years of heavy expansion.

The Dallas firm currently has a portfolio of 160 golf, country and other clubs entirely in the USA, including eight premium golf resorts. But it has now agreed to buy Sequoia, which itself runs 50 golf clubs in the USA, for $265 million.

Presently Troon Golf is the world’s leading golf club management company, with just over 200 golf clubs on its books, spread throughout the world. The deal for Sequoia means ClubCorp will own about as many golf clubs as Troon Golf manages.

It also means that the world’s two dominant players, Troon Golf and ClubCorp, both view golf clubs as needing to offer more than just golf.

ClubCorp CEO Eric Affeldt said: “There are sectors in golf like us who are doing quite well.

“We have repeatedly said we’re in the membership business. People don’t just come to one of our clubs to play golf. The come to dine, to swim, to play tennis, to recreate, and to work out.

“Golf is a part of what we do … but it’s not all that we do.”
