A long-term member of Chigwell Golf Club in Essex has been killed after being knocked down by a van during a round of golf.

The incident happened at Thetford Golf Club at the end of February, according to the Eastern Daily Press.

A B-road runs next to Thetford Golf Club and golfers have to cross it to move from the fifth to the sixth hole.

It was during this walk that the 78-year-old golfer, who was part of a 70-strong group from Chigwell Golf Society, was hit by a Mercedes van.

‘Members and staff of the golf club tried to resuscitate the man, including the use of a defibrillator and CPR, but he died at the scene,’ reported the paper.

Malcolm Grubb, manager of Thetford Golf Club, said the victim had been using a trolley to carry his clubs as he tried to cross the road.

The man was part of a three-ball, and was following his two companions, who had already safely crossed the road. Mr Grubb said it was unclear what had happened next.

He offered his condolences to the victim’s family and the society.

“It’s a tragedy, especially as they came here to have a nice day playing golf. We are desperately sad that the day has ended in this way.

“Everything was done to try and resuscitate the man, including our own staff using a defibrillator we have recently bought. Unfortunately, it was unsuccessful but they kept trying until the paramedics arrived.

“Of course the club offers our sympathies to the man’s family and Chigwell Golf Society,” he said.

Last year members of Royal Norwich Golf Club voted to relocate about seven miles away with one of the reasons being that golfers have to cross a busy road during their rounds, risking accidents.

Edit: The article originally incorrectly stated that the pensioner died at Chigwell Golf Club. Thanks to Frank Clapp in the comments for pointing out this error.

I have played at Chigwell many times in the past and am totally unaware of any roads running through or anywhere near the golf course! The fifth is a par 5 and you walk next to a short par 3. Both the 5th green and 6th tee are in the middle of the golf course!

It wasn’t at Chigwell it was at Thetford. The players were Chigwell members on a day out at Thetford,
