Izaak Walton Golf Club in Stoke, a popular 18-hole venue, has entered liquidation.

The club has shut its clubhouse and boarded up its doors and windows.

Two months ago posters were taped to the front of the club notifying the public that the company had ‘ceased to trade’. But according to the Express & Star, businessmen were still turning up at the club expecting to attend meetings, only to find the premises shut up and nobody around.

In May the club stopped advertising its facilities via Twitter and Facebook, but it made no announcement on social media about the closure – in fact the club’s last few tweets in May are all advertising green fees and buggies at the course.

A statement on its website reads: ‘It is with regret that I inform you that on the 16 May 2016 Izaak Walton Golf Club went into liquidation and the golf club closed. Liquidation of Izaak Walton Golf Club is being conducted by Currie Young Ltd, The Old Barn, Caverswall Park, Caverswall Lane, Stoke on Trent.  ST3 6HP.’

The reasoning behind the sudden closure of the 18-hole course and clubhouse is unclear however.

The news surprised many on social media with a local school contacting the club to ask why it is not answering its phone regarding finalising plans for a forthcoming golf day and a golf tour asking the club if it is open.

Others, like Uttoxeter Golf Club, have offered Izaak Walton’s members a complimentary round of golf, and Trentham Park Golf Club has said it will offer one-off deals to the club’s members.
