The Samaritans charity has announced it is running a special fundraising event next month at Rotherham Golf Club, which is home to 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett.

“The event, on August 8, will see golf teams take to the course in order to compete for the tournament title,” said a spokesman.

“Win or lose, everyone will be entertained with dinner, trophy presentations, a charity raffle and auction in the iconic clubhouse.”

The event is the brainchild of Rotherham businessman Mark McGrail, whose specialist environmental services firm, SME, supports a range of community initiatives in the town, including soup kitchens.

Mark McGrail said: “The aim of the Rotherham Charity Golf Day is to raise as much money as possible to support Samaritans’ life-saving work. Life is tough, and these are uncertain times, but no one needs to go it alone with their problems.

“If you’re feeling overwhelmed or like you’re just under too much pressure, Samaritans will listen and help you work through your problems – there is hope. It could be work, family, relationships, money – anything at all. By raising funds with this event, we want people to have a great day to remember, and go away knowing they’ve done something amazing that could help someone they know further down the line.”

There are a range of ways that local individuals and organisations can get involved in the event, from sponsoring a hole to donating prizes for the auction and raffle.

Samaritans’ Events fundraising manager, Hannah Dumbleton, said: “Samaritans responds to more than 5.4 million calls for help a year, and we rely on donations to run our services and train our volunteers, who are  based in 201 branches all over the UK and Ireland, including Percy St in Rotherham. We are so grateful to SME and all those who are playing or supporting this event. It’s going to be a brilliant day of golf on a well renowned course, for an incredible cause.”

If you would like to know more about sponsoring this event, or to donate an auction or raffle prize, please email Scott Roberts, operations manager at SME on scott@sme-ltd.co.uk.
