Footballers have often delved into the world of golf as a way to pass their free time away from the pitch. However, some have played more golf than others, with some even getting a reputation for putting golf above the sport that they are actually paid to play. But, which stars of the world of football have a famous reputation for playing golf, and how good are they at the sport?

Gareth Bale

There aren’t many footballers on the planet that play more golf than Gareth Bale. His appearances on the golf courses have made national headlines in Spain, with some teammates admitting that he spends too much time playing the sport. Bale fuelled the fire further after pictures emerged after Wales reached EURO 2020 with the Welshman holding a flag saying ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order’. The news didn’t go down too well back in Spain. However, his ability on the green is solid, and he has been seen playing at Sawgrass and Augusta in the past.

Harry Kane

There must be something in the water at Tottenham Hotspur, as current club striker Harry Kane is also an avid golfer according to SpursForLife. The England captain is often seen playing golf in his free time and is renowned as one of the most talented golfers in the national team. Kane plays off a handicap of four and often scores par rounds. In the past, he has been seen playing at Turnberry and the Centurion Club.

Wayne Rooney is also a big fan of golf and plays off a 16 handicap. Rooney is known to take to the golf course as a way to get away from the daily grind and pressure of being one of the most instantly recognisable footballers in the world. He is reportedly very good friends with Manchester United fan Rory McIlroy, with the Northern Irishman also claiming that Rooney played a part in his success at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. McIlroy has been using his platform to ensure more children to get into sport over previous years.

Peter Crouch

If there is one footballer that doesn’t necessarily look like he belongs on a golf course, then it is Peter Crouch. Crouch is a literal giant of the game at 6’7”, which means every time that he plays on a golf course it makes for an interesting sight. Due to his size, it often looks as though he is playing with children’s clubs. His love for the sport has been well-documented, and he was recently involved in a charity golf event that was put on by Paddy Power, which also included Jamie Redknapp, Andrew Flintoff and Piers Morgan.

Alan Shearer

Another footballing fan of golf is the player that has scored the most goals in the history of the Premier League. Alan Shearer enjoyed an excellent playing career, which also included winning the top-flight title with Blackburn Rovers in 1995. He is also pretty handy on the golf course and plays to a handicap of six. Shearer has also played in numerous Pro-am events over the past couple of years, which includes the British Masters in 2017.
