Cambridge Golf Club closes down
Cambridge Golf Club has closed down and will be converted into a new town’s housing estate.
The owner of the 21-year-old 18-hole proprietary golf club said he made the decision due to economic reasons.
The golf club will now become the home to Northstowe, a new town featuring 9,500 energy efficient properties that lies about seven miles outside Cambridge city centre.
At least 1,500 homes will be on the former golf course, after planning permission was granted last year – meaning the closure came as little surprise to the golf club’s members and staff.
Cambridge Golf Club’s owner, Ken Green, said: “When it’s uneconomic, how long can you keep something open?
“You can only carry on with something that is losing money for so long. It is a very sad day.”
A statement on the club’s website simply says that the club has closed down and the domain name is for sale.
Colin Chapman, the club’s manager, said that he was also saddened by the development, but was disappointed that he was only given nine days’ notice about the closure.
“People are upset that that they did not have more notice,” he said.
“We were only given nine days’ notice that the club was going to close.
“People were expecting it but they could have given a bit more notice – it has all happened very quickly.
“It is a bit sad for all the members, especially as some didn’t have time to play a final round.”
