9. Bubba Watson, 2013. ‘Thanks Chris Broussard for sharing your faith’

There aren’t many current American basketball players that UK sports’ fans could name, but arguably the most famous is Jason Collins, who became the first active male professional athlete in a major North American team sport to come out publicly as gay, earlier this year.

He received support from all over the world, with even Barack Obama saying he was proud of him.

But it wasn’t unanimous – basketball commentator Chris Broussard responded to Collins coming out by saying that homosexuality was ‘a sin’ and a ‘rebellion against God’.

Broussard received an enormous backlash on Twitter for his comments, which sparked Bubba, the 2012 Masters champion, to rush to his defence. ‘Thanks Chris Broussard for sharing your faith and the Bible!! #Godisgood’, he wrote on the same social media site.

It wasn’t the support that Broussard wanted – he responded by releasing a statement saying he had been an ‘intolerant buffoon’.
