A goodwill gesture from European Tour professional Eddie Pepperell has resulted in 51 children joining Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire.

The golfer gave his sponsorship money to the golf club for it to spend on providing opportunities to youngsters to play golf, but the demand from juniors far exceeded what was expected.

The increase has meant the club’s junior section has grown by almost two-thirds in one fell swoop.

It is even more remarkable because the club thought it would lead to 24 new memberships, but decided to allow all 51 children to join so as not to exclude anyone.

Frilford Heath sponsors Eddie Pepperell and he decided to return the money provided it was spent on young golfers, and the club decided to create 24 free 12-month memberships, including coaching.

The club then appealed for youngsters who had little or no golfing experience, focusing on six local schools.

As a result, 51 children have joined the club and are benefitting from six coaching sessions.

The new crop, who increase Frilford’s junior section to 130, have met Pepperell, 25, who said: “I don’t see it that I’ve made it possible in any way, shape or form.

“It’s the club that have helped that along and hopefully more juniors are going to be able to play.

“Any kids playing golf is great, but I want to help those who maybe don’t have the access.”

Jimmy James, Frilford’s general manager, said: “Rather than going through an interview process and delaying things, by bringing everyone on board it will generate a bigger buzz.

“I think it’s a fantastic initiative.

“There are so many people who don’t have a dabble at golf and Eddie’s opened the door to everyone.”

Pepperell is currently ranked 154 in the world and has recently been in the top 80.
