Golf equipment sent to returning soldiers
The PGA is to provide British soldiers returning from duty in Afghanistan with a selection of new golf equipment.
The association has teamed up with Titleist, which is shipping eight sets of clubs to Cyprus, where all troops on active service in Afghanistan are required to spend 24 hours at the end of their tour of duty before returning to the UK.
Golf is a popular activity among servicemen and women – especially during that 24-hour period.
Leigh Davies, European marketing manager for Titleist Clubs, said: “It is my sincere hope that this donation allows the troops to enjoy some well earned leisure time during their decompression in Cyprus, and that the Titleist equipment provided adds to their overall enjoyment of the game of golf.”
The package of clubs is just the latest initiative by the PGA to support and recognise Britain’s Armed Forces.
In 2011, Colin Montgomerie took the Ryder Cup to Afghanistan on a morale-boosting tour. He was accompanied by PGA captain Eddie Bullock and former PGA captain Parnell Reilly.
PGA professionals have also been at the forefront of working with injured troops at the military rehabilitation centre at Headley Court as part of the PGA Golf Buddy Programme.
Bullock said: “Since my visit to meet with our troops in Afghanistan there has been an emotional connection. There is nothing more satisfying than the feeling of belonging to a group who are dedicated to helping each other, this is one small contribution, to say thank you.”
